Delegates and members of the Democratic party booed after former Gov. Ted Strickland (D-OH) discussed God and moved to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Convention chairman Antonio Villaraigosa, mayor of Los Angeles, had to ask for the Yea and Nay vote several times before declaring the motion passed.
C-SPAN cameras captured the dissatisfaction among members after the motion passed.
------------------------
Those opposed to the re-inclusion of God and Jerusalem into the platform (the "no" votes) were clearly in the majority in the first voice vote. So the chair re-did the voice vote, and the "no" votes were louder still!
The chairman's face plainly displayed a type of surprise and chagrin when he realizes the vote did not go as scripted. He pauses for an interminable 15 seconds, looking around for some help from anywhere, then calls an incredible third voice vote, which clearly sounds split 50-50.
But to follow the script, the chair gives it to the "yes" votes, thus adding God and Jerusalem back into the platform.
And the hall erupted in boos and catcalls! The "no" votes were clearly in the majority!
